Interview Magazine Russia; Vanessa Paradis

24 Apr

Vanessa Paradis can be defined as an actress, songstress, fashion icon, model, mother and lady.

The French beauty has previously shared the silver screen with Jeanne Moreau and Jean Reno, and is also in receipt of the highly accredited ‘Caesar Award’.

Within the fashion domain, Paradis has previously modelled for Miu Miu and is a Chanel muse. The French fashion house have sought Vanessa to face an increasing number of campaigns including ‘Ligne Cambon’, ‘The New Madamoiselle’, ‘Coco Rouge’ and ‘Coco Cocoon’.

Interview Russia have recently sparked my interest with their creative covers. The magazine’s May issue places Vanessa Paradis in the role of a biker chic protagonist. Attired in toughened Chanel, Paradis’ typical image is juxtaposed as she glamorously lounges on a motorbike.

With smoked eyes, a neutral palette and quiff-ed tresses, this cover will send tremors throughout the beauty domain.

This unconventional cover is fashionably alarming and whets one’s appetite for the accompanying editorial. The magazine will hit news stands on April 26th.

Previous Interview Russia edition’s worth noting include the publication’s January issue with Lana Del Rey and the April edit featuring Keira Knightley, both were nothing short of inspirational.

KARL – Karl Lagerfeld in BT2

29 Feb

Karl Lagerfeld is one of the most recognised and esteemed names in the fashion domain.

Having first interned with Pierre Balmain, Lagerfeld is now an established brand whilst also the creative director of both Chanel and Fendi.

The famed photographer, designer and DJ has sought to add one more feather to his bow. The German has collaborated with Net-A-Porter in the creation of a capsule collection; KARL.

The collection is imbued with metallic and monochromatic tones whilst also capturing the essence of Lagerfeld with statement pieces such as embellished collars, structured androgynous jackets and cut-out gloves.

Whilst price-tags escalate to nearly €1,000, one can purchase a branded tote for merely €19. It is rare that high fashion is this accessible!

The garments first launched online through Net-A-Porter, but Ireland’s very own BT2 will be the first store to internationally stock the line.

On the 1st of March at 9:30am, customers of the Grafton Street store will be permitted to enter into a Lagerfeld haven and nab a piece or two from one of the year’s most desired collections.

Whilst further enticement is not needed, BT2 will also be giving the first ten customers, an exclusive KARL collar with their purchase.

Also, with DJ Mo Kelly present and KARL cocktails in abundance, this is a launch which is not to be missed!

The above are some of my favourite pieces from the collection, what are yours?

Numéro #131 March by Karl Lagerfeld

26 Feb

Numéro was founded by editor-in-chief, Elisabeth Dijan in 1998. What was the lady’s rationale for creating a new publication?

”I was bored with magazines that told me how to seduce a man. I wanted to create this magazine for an intelligent, smart woman who wants to read about art, design, music: not about stupidity – creams that take away wrinkles, you know, which is stupid.”

For the magazine’s March issue (no. 131), the magazine chose Karl Lagerfeld to lens four of the domain’s most popular models. Wearing garments from Spring’s Haute Couture catwalks, the covers are alarmingly beautiful.

In my two favourite covers, both styled by Rebecca Bleynie & Vanessa MetzNext model Karlie Kloss, stuns the reader in Jean Paul Gaultier all the while Saskia de Brauw, is effortlessly elegant in Chanel.

Which model wins it for you?

‘My New Friend Boy’; Chanel

15 Feb

When defining the Chanel lady, it is with incredible ease that actresses such as Keira KnightleyVanessa Paradis and Blake Lively are listed.

However, in the brand’s campaign for the ‘Boy’ bag, Karl Lagerfeld chose an atypical ambassador for the line; Alice Dellal. The model is signed with Next Model Management and is instantaneously recognised by her half-shaved head.

Dellal has a multitude of impressive credentials to her name, including being the face of both Agent Provocateur and Mango. The British beauty not only embodies the look of rock star chic, but lives the lifestyle as she is the drummer for punk band Thrush Metal.

To endorse and publicise the line, Lagerfeld took inspiration from the much accredited film ‘The Artist’ to create a miniscule silent film of his own; ‘My New Friend Boy’.

In front of the designer’s lens, Alice Dellal performs mundane routines, whilst attired in the finest of French garments. The dramatic classic soundtrack only enhances the artistic nature of the video and will most definitely provide a new fan or two for Dellal.

Vogue Italia; Kristen Stewart

13 Nov

Within the twenty-first century, the journey to stardom and success within the realm of Hollywood has experienced much change. Reality television and social networking has provided the audience with many of today’s most recognisable faces.

Today, there are very few actors and actresses who have grafted their craft through the old-fashioned method of determination, incessant auditioning and an innate passion for the industry. Kristen Stewart is one such actress.

Having begun her film career at eleven years of age, the child-actress started her movie portfolio by sharing the screen with icons such as Glenn Close and Jodie Foster.

With the forthcoming release of ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part One’, due in cinemas this week, the fashion domain will peer down the microscope to examine what Stewart parades down the globe’s red carpets.

Vogue Italia, with editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani, is often considered to be the least commercial of Vogue’s publications and the magazine which holds most influence on fashion. The editorials contained within, often defy social conventions and leave the reader aghast with shocking and provocative imagery.

For their November issue, Vogue Italia chose Kristen Stewart as their gothic protagonist for the issue’s most hauntingly beautiful editorial.

Michelangelo di Battista captured the actress’ icy glare in regal and majestic poses whilst Alice Gentilucci provided a modern, tough edge to the montage with styling that included creations by Marchesa, Giambattista Valli and Chanel.

Kate Moss – US Vogue – The September Issue

11 Aug

“I have a dress-up chest at home. I love to create this fantasy kind of thing”

- Kate Moss

Kate Moss is photographed wearing a gown by Alexander McQueen.

At the tender age of fourteen, in New York’s JFK airport, Kate Moss was scouted by Sarah Doukas, the founder of Storm Management. As Moss infiltrated the model domain, her name became connotated with the title of ‘the anti-supermodel’. Kate Moss exhibited a strikingly different silhouette, to those of the popular models such as Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer during the late twentieth-century.

With the release of a campaign for Calvin Klein, Moss quickly became a household name. Throughout her career Kate Moss has collaborated with major designer labels and fashion houses such as Dolce & Gabbana, Bulgari, Chanel and Gucci.

Kate Moss is photographed wearing a Rodarte pailette coat and dress. Jamie Hince is photographed wearing a Lanvin velvet blazer and Charvet cotton shirt.

When headlines first broke about the engagement of Kate Moss and Jamie Hince (of ‘The Kills’ fame), much speculation ensued regarding the ceremony’s attendees, the designer of the bride’s gown and where the ornate images would be published.

The audience was quickly informed that Kate Moss would be bestowed the honour of appearing on the cover of  US Vogue’s September Issue with an editorial encapsulating the highlights of the bride and groom’s nuptials.

The romantic images capture the intimacy between the bride and groom and the fashionable atmosphere of love and well-wishes from Moss and Hince’s guests. The editorial was photographed by Mario Testino with an accompanying profile of the event by Hamish Bowles.

Kate Moss & Lila Grace create a portrait inspired by Calvin Klein’s campaign which shot the model to stardom.

The wedding guest list saw moguls from the domains of fashion, music and film attending the countryside nupitals. John Galliano, The Hon. Daphne Guinness, Philip Treacy, Anna Wintour, Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Mark Ronson, Jude Law and Marc Jacobs were but a few of the fortunate attendees.

The Hon. Daphne Guinness & Lady Amanda Harlech

31 Jul

“The more you concentrate on something, the more it shows. I can’t get dressed if I think about it too much,…I don’t dress for effect, and I think that it never works out when someone does.”

- The Hon. Daphne Guinness

“I moved on from deconstructing my school uniform via punk, to Tess of the D’Urbervilles and the eponymous Geisha to an edge which I now recognise as ‘Amanda,….[My look has become] stronger, more distilled and less scattered.”

- Lady Amanda Harlech

Within the fashion realm, Daphne Guinness and Amanda Harlech could be defined as the industry’s darlings.

Daphne is an heiress of the Guinness family, a collector of Haute Couture and has a keen interest in the use of armour as fashion. Guinness was once married to the Greek shipping heir Spyros Niarchos and is the mother of Nick Niarchos, Alexis Niarchos and Ines Niarchos.

The heiress is fashionably unpredictable and reflects upon previous historical eras to gain inspiration for her unique sense of style. In 2010 with Isabella Blow’s recent death, Daphne Guinness bought the magazine editor’s entire wardrobe. Guinness’ purchase aimed to “prevent Issie’s possessions becoming mere morbid memorbilia…to preserve it”.

Lady Amanda Harlech has inhabited the fashion domain for nearly three decades. She has been a muse, an inspiration and an interpreter for style greats such as John Galliano and Karl Lagerfeld.

Lady Harlech describes herself as a pathfinder, one who is working her way through a narrative line, trying to find a natural truth. With a background in English Literature from Oxford University, Harlech notes the similarities between the questioning techniques she employed in her literature studies and those which she utilises at the House of Chanel, to help Karl Lagerfeld fully express his creative visions.

This week, Harlech spoke to ShowStudio.com and defined fashion as a “process of discovery, or rejection, or abandonment, or transformation”.

V Magazine and Karl Lagerfeld, this month, have collaborated to transform Harlech’s vision of fashion into a reality. Lady Harlech and The Hon. Daphne Guinness are long-time fashionable comrades and features in V Mag’s editorial as each other.

In the editorial, Lady Amanda is photographed in a Chanel Haute Couture gown, a gift from Karl Lagerfeld. Sarah Burton, from Alexander McQueen, recently designed the creation Miss Guinness exhibits.

In the accompanying interview, their personal style, their friendship and their transformation are each under discussion.

How the two became best friends:

Daphne Guinness:

I honestly can’t remember where, but it’s been nearly two decades now. I do, however, remember my first impression: she was the most beautiful person I had ever encountered in my life, like an ethereal fairy. She has become a kindred spirit who, like me, loves the idea of beautiful things more than the concept of fashion. She’s a very well-rounded person, and has a good amount of distance from the drama of it all. And, since we’re speaking of transformations, allow me to say what’s inside of her hasn’t changed. Ever.

Amanda Harlech:

I met Daphne at a fashion show in London. I forget the designer, but I remember being mesmerized by this modern Anna Karenina, a fragile bird in a tilting hat with a veil, porcelain skin, and dark, lustrous eyes that looked like they were full of tears. There was a dark velvet, blackish purple something, a ribbon maybe, and gloves, and delicacy, and a peal of laughter with a lyric voice from another century. Yeah, it was love at first sight!

How it felt to transform into one another:

Amanda Harlech:

When I walked out on set with my blonde hairpieces, Karl burst out laughing and said I looked like a hausfrau. I won’t be doing it again, but secretly I did love the allure of Daphne’s blondeness. It was like playing the princess role instead of always being the witch.

Daphne Guinness:

I trust Karl implicitly, but I wasn’t entirely excited about becoming a brunette. Yet, the end result was something magical: I was very surprised, and I wasn’t expecting Karl to take as many pictures as he did. I sort of channeled Amanda at the end, and she was channeling me, and it was extraordinary. Let’s be honest: it could have gone horribly wrong, but it was a stroke of genius on Karl’s part.

The final image exhibits the execution of Lagerfeld’s transformation. Unexpectedly, the change is subtle. With a change of hair colour and couture gown, it is striking how aesthetically alike Guinness and Harlech are.

Love Magazine: Strangely Romantic

28 Jul

Nyasha Mathondze - The Love Magazine Issue Six

Love Magazine has themed the fashion bible’s sixth issue ‘Super Natural’.

The issue will feature starlets gracing eight independent limited-edition covers. The first three covers will be available to the company’s fashionable fan base on August 1st. The remaining five cover options, will reach readers on September 1st.

The cover editorials are eccentrically Victorian and feature the models in a romantic inspired wardrobe with fierce embellishments.

‘Super Natural’ exposes the models to exhibit their natural beauty in an understated and forlorn pose. Falling teardrops are a common theme in the magazine’s eight covers.

Elle Fanning - Love Magazine Issue Six

The glossy images were photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot. Arianne Philips, Fashion Editor, is responsible for the timeless styling with assistance from Ashley Javier and Kirstin Piggott for hair and make-up.

The focus on youthful muses further accentuates the high esteem which young ladies such as Elle Fanning, Chloe Moretz and Nyasha Mathondze are held with, within the fashion domain.

At merely thirteen years Elle Fanning has achieved gargantuan fashionable milestones. The actress was an invitee at Chanel’s Parisian Haute Couture catwalk and is currently the face of Marc by Marc Jacobs. The American beauty is hauntingly alluring in a lace and ribbon adorned Anna Sui creation.

Chloe Moretz is featured in an intricately beaded and lace white Chanel gown. The glittering Vivienne Westwood horns extruding from Moretz’s crown is a stark contrast to the actresses boring gaze.  Moretz appears naively elegant in her desolate pose.

Hailee Steinfeld - Love Magazine Issue Six

Hailee Steinfeld is the latest cover to be released. With coral lips, a pearlised tiara and green accents, Steinfeld’s cover is more bold and refrains from the natural colour palette exhibited in Elle Fanning’s and Chloe Moretz’s features.

Lara Stone - Love Magazine Issue Six

Love Magazine is unrestrained by artistic or creative boundaries. The newest issue promises discipline, obsession and desire. Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot never fail to impress their audience.

Sarah Jessica Parker – The Age Issue

13 Jul

“I like my money right where I can see it… hanging in my closet.”

- Carrie Bradshaw, Sex & The City.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s career has explored the domains of film, fashion and charitable foundations. The actress is most recognisable from her role as Carrie Bradshaw, in HBO’s infamous series Sex & The City’. She has also starred in feature films such as Footloose (1984), Hocus Pocus (1993) and Did You Hear About the Morgans? (2009).

Within the realm of fashion, Parker maintains a highly-respected reputation for her risqué and informed wardrobe choices. In the year of the Millennium, SJP hosted the MTV Movie Awards and exhibited an impressive fourteen ensembles throughout the awards segment. Parker is also the namesake for the popular fragrances; ‘Lovely’, ‘Covet’, ‘Dawn’, ‘Endless’ and ‘Twilight’.

Sarah Jessica Parker has once again been bestowed the honour of appearing on Vogue’s cover. Parker adorns the August edition annually titled ‘The Age Issue’, in a beautiful white Burberry trench coat. ‘The Age Issue’ will be released on July 19th.

On identifying with Carrie Bradshaw:

“Bradshaw’s life is nothing — nothing — like mine,” she says. “I loved playing her, and it changed my life in lots of wonderful ways, but I’m not a crazy shoe lady, I don’t think about fashion all day long, although I have a great respect for the industry. Every choice we’ve made has been different.”

On being unable to leave New York City:

“You do start to understand the behind-the-gate mentality, the getting in the car in your driveway…but I can’t imagine living in seclusion. We flirted with it. We went outside the city and troubled all these Realtors and stood in these homes and fantasized, and then I kept picturing nine o’clock at night and” — she breaks into mime, drumming her fingers on her crossed knees and staring into the middle distance. “The beautiful thing about New York is, you have to expose yourself to other people the minute you step outside the door. There is no choice. And I love that.”

On her love of fashion:

“I love the opportunity to wear something really special and go to a wonderful event at some great cultural institution. Not to sound too Pollyanna about it, but I really didn’t imagine when I was a little girl that I would be there to see it all myself.”

On getting dressed for an evening out:

For the Spring Gala of American Ballet Theater, where she serves on the board, she chose a black-and-white lace Valentino because “it was his birthday, and I thought that was a nice way of acknowledging that.” At the Met last May in tribute to Alexander McQueen, she borrowed a nude beaded column from the designer’s archive. “I love the opportunity to wear something really special and go to a wonderful event at some great cultural institution….Not to sound too Pollyanna about it, but I really didn’t imagine when I was a little girl that I would be there to see it all myself.”

Chanel Finalé - Paris Fall 2011 Couture - Photo: Wire Image

Karl Lagerfeld showcased Chanel’s Autumn / Winter Couture collection on July fifth at the Grand Palais.

The location was fashionably transformed into the  Place Vendôme, with the designer replacing the Palais’ statue of Napoleon Bonaparte, to one of the design house’s namesake, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel.

This season’s Couture collection can be viewed as a map of Coco Chanel’s distinctive design career.

Tweed jackets and suit attire were the catwalk’s opening looks, reference was made to Paul Poiret‘s influence on Gabrielle in the middle of the show, whilst modern silhouettes and craftwork were represented at the collection’s climax.

The models paraded down the runway to an accompaniment by Michel Gaubert.

With cropped jackets and striking shoulders, this season’s couture imbued a vibe which was once connotated with the 1940′s.

Lagerfeld is constantly surprising the audience with his efforts to create an unforgettable experience at a Chanel show. Last night was no exception.

As the models paraded their final ensembles at the show’s close, the fashion house remained true to their geographical location; ‘The City of Lights’.

Lagerfeld’s appearance at the finalé prompted the models’ footwear to illuminate and cast light upon their deity designer.
