British Vogue; Lana Del Rey

2 Feb

Elizabeth Grant, more commonly known by her stage name Lana Del Rey, is a twenty-five year old American songstress who rocketed to fame with the release of her track ‘Video Games’.

With millionaire Rob Grant for a father, the lavish lifestyle is not unfamiliar to Miss Del Rey, merely taking success and popularity in her stride.

Thus far, Del Rey has achieved success in the Irish charts having reached the number seven spot with ‘Video Games’ and number twenty-eight with her latest track ‘Born To Die’.

British Vogue have honoured the New York beauty in the March issue of their magazine. The Next Management model poses in front of Mario Testino‘s lens for the cover and accompanying editorial.

Styled in a Louis Vuitton Spring / Summer 2012 ensemble, it is without doubt that Lana Del Rey will possess a career of immeasurable longevity in either the music or modelling domains.

The magazine will be available from February 6th and features a candid interview with the star on her experiences thus far. Below are some of the conversation’s highlights.

On Christopher Kane and Emilio de la Morena choosing her music to accompany their spring/summer 2012 shows:

“I had no idea about the fashion shows. But I think they chose Video Games because it embodies summertime sadness. Fashion is inspired by youth and nostalgia and draws inspiration from the best of the past. I think both the song and the collections touch on the light and the dark side of life.”

On her rise to musical stardom being almost accidental:

“I was always singing, but didn’t plan on pursuing it seriously. When I got to New York City when I was 18, I started playing in clubs in Brooklyn – I have good friends and devoted fans on the underground scene, but we were playing for each other at that point – and that was it.”

On choosing her stage name:

“I wanted a name I could shape the music towards. I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba – Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue.”

Vogue Russia; Lily Cole

17 Dec

Lily Cole begins the new year with a glamorous turn on the pages of Vogue Russia.

The British beauty epitomises the doll generation of models, with the editorial and cover particularly emphasising Cole’s porcelain skin tone and bold lip colour.

The cover and accompanying editorial were photographed by Anthony Maule whilst make-up artist Gemma Arterton (Arterton is also Lily Cole’s co-star in St Trinian’s) paints a visage similar to those of Mattel’s most famous products.

Although much of the editorial is fashioned to promote the model’s youthful exterior, stylist Ekaterina Mukhina employs many of Spring’s most coveted looks to exhibit Cole’s contrasting coarse characteristics.

Mukhina chose pieces from the latest collections of Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Haider Ackermann and Dior.

Fashionable Decades; Teen Vogue

22 Aug

Fashion is malleable, effervescent to the needs and demands of the modern woman. Throughout history, style has transformed to accommodate the social and economic eras. In recent times, vintage trends have gained popularity as fashionable fans reflect back on previous silhouettes to gain modern inspiration.

For their current issue, Teen Vogue entitled an editorial ‘Comeback Kids; Re-Interpreting Decades Past’. The shoot features youthful models exhibiting a range of contemporary designer pieces which reference the infamous trends of previous decades.

Decade: The Twenties

Ada is photographed wearing a dress by Jill Stuart, Jeremy Scott by Linda Farrow glasses, bangles by Alexis Bittar and shoes by Diane von Furstenberg.

Iana is photographed wearing a M. Missoni dress, necklace by Aurélie Bidermann and clutch by Edie Parker.

Milica is photographed wearing a Jill Stuart dress and shoes by Marni.

Fashion during the Twenties is symbolised by women’s liberation. The female race was no longer habitually constricted by narrow silhouettes and for the first time ladies opted for comfortable clothing such as trousers and skirts with short hemlines.

The silhouette of this period, although comfortable, was also flattering. Garments were fitted close to the body whilst the flapper style minimised waistlines and uniquely exposed vast amounts of skin.

Decade: Forties

Iana is photographed wearing a coat by Carven, glasses by Mykita & Alexandre Herchovitch, CeCe Toppings collar, clutch by Marc Jacobs and shoes by Calvin Klein Collection.

Ada is photographed wearing a dress by Jill Stuart and Marc by Marc Jacobs boots.

Milica is photographed wearing a Marc by Marc Jacobs cardigan, blouse and shorts, a hat by Gucci and bag by Donna Karan New York.

World War I attributed huge influence to the fashion and styles of the Forties. Uniqueness in clothing became extinguished as uniformity and dull palettes were embraced. One was encouraged to mend and patch older items with purchases rationed to a limited number of coupons.

This era, due to limited financial resources, promoted minimal material with even shorter hemlines, bare legs and buttons curtailed to three-a-piece on a garment.

Decade: Fifties

Iana is photographed wearing a Burberry Brit cardigan, skirt by J.W. Anderson, glasses by Linda Farrow Luxe, bag by Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton shoes.

Ada is photographed wearing a blazer and shirt by McQ, skirt by Marc Jacobs and shoes by Oscar de la Renta.

Milica is photographed wearing a shirt and bag by Marc Jacobs, pants by J.W. Anderson, hat is stylist’s own and shoes by Jimmy Choo.

As designers approached the 1950′s the utilitarian attire, which become popular in the previous decade, quickly became monotonous and dreary to create. The ‘New Look’ which launched at the beginning of this decade included embellished round shoulders, narrow waistlines and full skirts.

The opulence which was previously deprived, suddenly became universally exhibited. During the beginning of this decade rationing was still mandatory but women craved the luxury they were once accustomed to. This affluent form of dress maintained prominent throughout the entire decade.

Decade: Sixties

Iana is photographed wearing a coat and trousers by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti and sunglasses by Tsumori Chisato.

Ada is photographed wearing a plastic raincoat by Burberry Prorsum and dress by Shoshanna.

Milica is photographed wearing a dress by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti and Marc Jacobs collar.

Decade: Seventies

Iana is photographed wearing a vest by Michael Kors, turtleneck by M. Missoni, Mulberry shorts, hat by Eugenia Kim and Marni shoes.

Milica is photographed wearing a knit cape and turtleneck by M. Missoni, See by Chloé trousers and bag by Fendi.

During the decades of the sixties and seventies, women chose to adapt an androgynous style. It was no longer unusual for women to wear trousers or shorts each day. These two eras are also synonymous with bell bottom pants, daringly short miniskirts, blue jeans and hot pants.

As the Seventies approached it was often difficult to distinguish between what styles were ‘in vogue’ and which were not due to the vast catalogue of styles and trends available.

Decade: Eighties

Ada is photographed wearing a jumper, skirt and shoes by D&G and belt bag by LeSportsac.

Iana is photographed wearing a dress and shoes by D&G and bangles by Alexis Bittar.

During the Eighties, clothing and fashion represented one’s financial / social status and power. With the decline of the previous decades’ repressive approach to fashion, Paris and New York became alight with a gargantuan number of customers seeking to buy pieces direct from the designers.

In this decade, fashion began to become affordable for the masses with producers replicating key pieces from the season, at a percentage of the cost, for the general public. To further nurse the economic burden many suffered, designers such as Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger began to create Ready to Wear collections to appeal to the less affluent purse.

Decade: Nineties

Ada is photographed wearing a vest by Isabel Marant, shirt by American Apparel, trousers by Calvin Klein Collection, bracelet by Chloé and Birkenstock sandals.

Iana is photographed wearing a dress by Helmut Lang, silver cuffs by Michael Kors and Birkenstock sandals.

Milica is photographed wearing a dress by Stella McCartney and Birkenstock sandals.

The final decade before the millenium highlighted a divergence from the opulence and luxury that was acquainted with the Eighties. Instead, women exhibited a comfortable silhouette which was prominently influenced by music. The rock ‘n’ roll movement incurred trends such as flannel shirts and ripped jeans whilst the hip hop genre influenced the popularity of baggy trousers.

In the future decades, how will the population rate the trends and fashion decisions of the present day. What should we, as an era, seek to be remembered for? How have we been influenced and by whom?

The editorial was photographed by Jason Kibbler with styling by Fashion Editor Nancy Rohde.

Hayden Williams:

Whilst trawling through the internet for fashionable inspiration, an alluring sketch caught my eye.

Hayden Williams, a London fashion design and illustration artist has frequented my news feed with his bright, enchanting sketches. On Williams’ blog, fitting tributes of pop culture icons such as Rihanna and Amy Winehouse are also rather prominent.

One of Hayden’s most recent sketches is particularly special – ‘The September Issue’. The model exhibits an Anna Wintour-esque hair style with designs featuring this season’s trends of checkerboard pattern and tuxedo-inspired tailoring.

Without doubt, Hayden Williams is a promising talent for fashion’s future, it would not be surprising if he soon featured in a Fashion Week near you.

Flaunt with Dianna Agron

30 Jul
Dianna Agron, at only twenty-five years, is one of Hollywood’s, most promising future leading ladies. The actress has featured in ‘Close to Home’, ‘CSI:NY’ and ‘Veronica Mars’.

Agron’s most notable role is as Quinn Fabray, in Fox’s hit musical drama, Glee’. Throughout the two series’, the American Beauty has showcased a trio of talents in acting, voice and dance.

Dianna Agron’s portrayal of a teenage cheerleader in ‘Glee’, has promoted much critical acclaim. In 2009 Agron was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in the category ‘Breakout Female Star’. The cast in unison have previously accepted a Screen Actors Guild Cast Award and two Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series in the category of musical or comedy.

Don’t Be a Drag, Just Be A Queen

28 Jun

Marc Jacobs, the luxury brand designer at the helm of Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs, first posed in drag  for Industrie Magazine in November. For the magazine’s current issue, the designer returns to the glossy pages as his feminine alter-ego.

The editorial was photographed by Patrick Demarchelier and was styled by Katie Grand.

With a vocation for fashion and style, Grand has collected an impressive number of pieces from Marc Jacobs’ design houses. It was these pieces, from her personal collection, which Jacobs wore throughout the shoot.

Fashionable Food

20 Jun

Social etiquette demands that one does not play with his / her food, merely eat it politely with a closed mouth and suitable cutlery.

Linus Morales, a Swedish photographer, has defied society’s demands to create iconic fashion images and logos, using the medium of food. With sausage, he creates Chanel links, using fried fish fingers the Fendi logo is captured whilst steak and toast replicate the Gucci and Louis Vuitton prints.

Food and fashion have had a requited relationship for a long period of time. Few can forget Lady GaGa’s dress made entirely of meat by Franc Fernandez. However, Morales’ portrayal of fashion in food, is of a more subtle tone and is an entertaining piece of artwork.

Actor Vs. Model?

14 Jun

Hollywood’s current ‘It’ girl, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, was recently questioned about her transition from modelling to acting. The British beauty’s response?

“Do you think it’s fair that actors have been taking the money out of hard-working models’ pockets? Actresses have completely taken over the fashion industry in the last five years, in terms of big deals. Maybe it’s time the models got some payback.”

Just days after her thought-provoking response, an increasing number of images and statements have been released, naming actors and actresses alike as luxury brand ambassadors.

Prada Menswear Autumn / Winter 2011 Campaign

Tobey Maguire, of Spiderman fame, has surprisingly been announced as the face of Prada’s Autumn / Winter 2011 campaign. Although Maguire is a distinguished and reputable actor, his fashion credentials and interests have often been limited.

Louis Vuitton Autumn / Winter 2011 Campaign

Prada is not the only fashion house who has borrowed a persona from Hollywood. This week the first images from Louis Vuitton‘s Autumn / Winter campaign have been released. The glossy photographs were shot by Annie Leibovitz and features Angelina Jolie as the collection’s protagonist.

Marc Jacobs has long been a fan of the stars and starlets of Hollywood blockbusters. Most recently, he has named Helena Bonham Carter as the brand’s newest ambassador.

Dakota Fanning is no stranger to Jacobs’ luxury label. Today, images were released of the designer’s ‘Oh, Lola!’ campaign, in which the  ‘Twilight’ actress is one of the key elements.

The feminine images were shot by Juergen Teller and accent the fragrance’s playful and floral tones.

Finally, St. John’s announced last month that Academy Award winner Kate Winslet would assist in their brand’s advertising. Winslet appears effortlessly chic in her billboard and will be an icon for the more refined generation who seek quality, comfort and elegance in their choice of clothing.

St John Autumn Campaign 2011
Anna Wintour, Editor-in-chief of US Vogue, was first responsible for the appearance of celebrities and actors alike on gleaming magazine covers. Since then, fashion and brand advertising has helped to propel and revive numerous celebrity careers. As we climb further through this decade, will the fascination that emanates from Hollywood begin to decline or is the future of modelling at risk of fashionable extinction?

‘Midnight in Paris’

19 May

Location: Tribeca Grand Screening Room, New York.

Thierry Mugler & The Cinema Society co-hosted a New York screening of ‘Midnight in Paris’ last night. The Woody Allen film stars Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Owen Wilson and Kathy Bates. With such a wealth of experience and talent on-screen and the aesthetic backdrops of Paris, the film will without doubt be a success.

The attendants at the soirée were polished and on trend with some even attired in Louis Vuitton’s recent creations. Olivia Palermo (of ‘The Hills’ fame) was particularly impressive with her androgynous menswear ensemble. Not for the first time, Palermo liberated herself from the expected gown attire. Last night, once again showcased her individual style which blends current trends and personal flare / creativity.

Palermo wore Charlotte Olympia’s ‘Bebel’ Leopard Print Platform Pumps along with a Charlotte Olympia ‘Pandora’ clutch which due to the transparent nature highlighted her preferences in cosmetics and mobile phone brand. Once again, she looks effortlessly chic on the red carpet, with the metallic tinges feminising the traditionally masculine outfit. The appearance was a great fashion success but personally, I think an elegant updo or chignon would have further accentuated the look’s femininity.
